When The Bun Family Players were in existence, I had already embarked on a regretful middle school experience whose memory makes me wince to this day.

Luckily, people like me who were too busy hanging around in the band room wing of school instead of bumming rides from a friend’s older sibling into the city had a chance to hear this song, once, played at a KEXP sponsored show at The Green Room of the Showbox in Seattle back in 2004. It’s a song that doesn’t sound like anything John’s written since, and could have acted as a fitting soundtrack to my years in high school spent chasing girls with long-distance boyfriends that they never bothered to tell me about.

With the last of three songs we’re posting from the show last month, here’s John Roderick performing The Bun Family Players’ Shane. See you this Saturday at The Triple Door. (Tickets)

It’s one of my favorite TLW songs, and the second in the series of clips shown here before the next show at The Triple Door on Saturday, August 14.
It’s hard to beat a show at The Triple Door, Seattle’s classiest venue for seeing top shelf musical acts in an intimate setting. For three dates this summer, John Roderick of The Long Winters performs on the main stage. (Tickets)

I hadn’t really planned on shooting any footage, but the beauty of the venue combined with the unique nature of the shows proved hard to resist. Sitting with me in the front row was photographer Laura Musselman, and together we captured the footage used for what is shown here.

Three videos will be posted before the next show, which is August 14th. The first song is ostensibly the first single off of The Long Winters’ forthcoming album, and it’s called, “Not Moving To Portland”.

“I guess the only thing I can say is I’ll promise to keep rockin’ and rollin’ and making better films…We can always do better. I’m going to keep trying if you guys keep trying. Let’s keep rockin’ and rollin’, man.”

Don’t miss your chance to own what The Stranger calls, “an ideal gift for the Long Winters fan in your life,” The Seattle Weekly described as, “a tasty tease at the masterwork to come,” and what I call, “A colossal investment in time and money that set me on the path to financial ruin!”

Truly and honestly, there weren’t that many made to begin with and there really aren’t that many left. I don’t know if there will be a reprinting, and you know once this band goes back out on the road they will be gone. Remember missing out on those Long Winters-brand kazoos a few years ago? I sure do, and it still stings.

This one was taken a few years ago. What did I want for Christmas? Another rock show, of course.

Word is the El Dubs might play some of the new material they’ve been working on since Putting the Days to Bed. What is certain is that they will unveil a new drummer – if only a temporary one until the position is shored up more permanently for touring purposes. The rest of the bill rounds out pretty well. I’m excited to see Slender Means – a band I saw many times a few years ago, but not a lot of since, and Friday Mile, who always put on a great show. Also not to be missed is a solo set from Phil O’Sullivan from Friday Mile, playing in the Cafe.

I attended this event last year and Doe Bay resort is really something else – it’s a beautiful piece of forest and pasture dotted with little shelters and gardens, surrounding the cold and tranquil waters of Doe Bay. Unlike camping at The Gorge, there is little chance you’ll wake up to some guy blasting Dave Matthews Band music out of the back of his 4-Runner at 7am. No, here the premium is placed on relaxation. It is a bucolic and wonderful place and it makes me wonder how the compound will deal with double the expected turnout this year, but I am confident they are up to the task.

The tickets are $30, which is a steal for a weekend’s worth of music in such a great setting. Be sure to camp and enjoy all that the grounds have to offer. They have trails, a rocky beach from which to swim in the bay, some (clothing optional) jacuzzi tubs and saunas, and some of the best views in the Puget Sound area.
