The Long Winters' new album, Putting The Days To Bed was released this week,
the culmination of months and months of the band's hard work.
With the album release Tuesday came in-store shows at two Seattle record store
institutions: Sonic Boom Records
and Easy Street Records.
As hot as the shows were at the Doug Fir and Neumos days before, it was even hotter inside 'the Boom' Tuesday
afternoon. The sales floor was packed, and I was positioned next to Jonathan
in adjoining pools of our own sweat. After the show we could have filled Nalgene
bottles with what we could wring our of our shirts. I'm sure the people I was
standing in front of were equally happy about my blocking their view as they
were with my drippings.
The conditions at Easy Street were far less temperate, as they removed an entire
wall to accommodate the crowd, allowing a nice breeze. Coupled with a few Red Stripes,
the going was easier that time around.
The shows were in contrast to each other in more ways than just heat, with the Sonic Boom show
being a concerted effort to play a 'low key' show, while the Easy Street setlist brought
more of an opportunity to rock the louder songs. The footage looks good, I'm just waiting on
the sound. I met a few generous tapers there, with whom I'll probably collaborate
on the sound portions of the two in-stores as well as the CD release shows.
In addition to filming the shows this week was a brief shoot at Sonic Boom to complete a montage I've been
shooting over a period of months. Interviews with Jonathan and more editing rounded it out.
I'm planning on going to New York the middle of next week to film a few shows and do some interviews with
New York-specific people. It'll be my first time there.
