There's this old Warner Brothers cartoon featuring Daffy Duck, where he plays Robin Hood. He tries robbing a traveler to impress Friar Tuck (played by Porky Pig), but fails spectacularly every time. Towards the end, he swings from the highest tree down to the path below, but continuously slams into trees on the way down. "Zoiks, and away!" he screams, before swinging again.

Why bring this up? It seems like a good description of what it's like to make a documentary film. More specifically, it's what it's like to try to get people to agree to an interview.

When making a film of the fictional variety, those involved - the actors and crew people (in theory) - want to be there, or are paid to be there, or whatever. In a documentary, the reliance is on people's charity. If they don't want to be a part of it, or they don't have time, there's not much one can do to convince them. They're the tree, the immovable object. It's just the way it is.

It's getting towards the end of shooting now with only a few interviewees left I need to get, and I'm starting to hit more trees than paths. The good news is that once shooting has been finished the only path is the end of the editing, and the only trees are self-made. It'll be nice to have more control over the destiny of the film.

Which is all a roundabout way of saying if you or anyone you know has had any sort of relationship with the band and those in it (or who were at one time in it), professional or otherwise, drop me a line and we'll talk.
