Sunday was 'wrap day' for John Roderick, the end of a series of interviews
over the last few weeks that accumulated over 18 hours of footage. It was
his last day in town before leaving to go on tour until October, or maybe
November, he didn't know which. And he really won't know which until closer
to that time.
It's a strange thing, to pack a bag and not really know when you're coming
home.
Oddly, I feel like our time wasn't enough. As anyone who has sat and talked
(or rather, listened) to John for any length of time will tell you, it
doesn't get much better than that.
There were many great and singular moments, and all of them can't be included so I'm thinking that the
good stuff that doesn't find its way into the film will be made
available in some form or another, either in extra features on the DVD(s) or something
downloadable here, like a video podcast or something.
Which is to say that given my druthers you'll have The Long Winters crammed into every orifice
you've got, and you won't even object, because how could you not want to see
something like the band's trip to a gun range, or a very special episode of
CRIBS from John's house, or a Judas Priest cover song? You'd be a fool to miss all of that.
Anyways, I'd love to keep shooting Long Winters shows and interviewing interesting
people and traveling around, but I can feel the pull that the end of this
project brings now that I'm closer to the end than I am to the beginning.
I'm motivated by the promise that there will be an end.
At least there is one for me. The band just keeps going.
Go see them out on tour.
